“Curator House”: Biodiversity Centre
Project type
“Curator House”: Biodiversity Centre
Date
2024
Project requirements:
The new "Curator House" Biodiversity Centre was erected to the Lapalala Wilderness School. The proposal specifies materials that must be sustainable and match the site's educational and residential architecture. For the sake of its patrons, this new centre requires a layout that includes:
Interactive exhibition and display space.
Pause & Reflection zone.
Multi-functional presentation space.
Casual eating area.
Bringing the view from outside to the inside.
Design solution:
Preferred materials like rammed earth and terrazzo, along with the colours utilized in the other buildings, were incorporated into the final design. The layout of the design ensures the best possible flow throughout the room. In addition to teaching the youth about South African traditions, the area has a secondary purpose of allowing them to create something artistic. The design honours nature, wildlife, and nearby Waterberg surroundings. Sustainable materials and techniques, like on-site terrazzo casting, are used in the design.
